  Guenter Edel*, LMBCSLA (#068), CSLA

General:
BCSLA Life Member Gunter Edel passed away on June 28, 2002. Mr. Edel was born in Hamburg , Germany in 1929, and emigrated to Canada in 1953. He practiced horticultural design and landscape architecture for 47 years, and was Director of Parks for the City of New Westminster from 1970 to 1990. He taught at the Northwest Parks and Recreation Maintenance School , at BCIT and as a guest lecturer at UBC.

General: Cornelia is often referred to as Canada's Premier Landscape Architect.  The early years were devoted to designing landscapes for low-cost housing projects and playgrounds throughout Canada.  Later projects feature integrated landscapes for high-profile public buildings that continue to garner international recognition.  Projects have included Robson Square and Provincial Government Courthouse Complex, Vancouver, BC, UBC Museum of Anthropology, Canadian Chancery, Washington, DC to name just a few.

Became member Can Society of Landscape Architects & Town Planners 1950; Community and Regional Planning, UBC 1951-1953. Joined Desmond Muirhead & Associates Landscape Architects (1948) in 1953 firm became between 1960 to1985 : Muirhead & Justice 1960 -1985, Justice & Webb then, Justice ,Webb & Vincent Landscape Architects. Some major projects include: University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon Campus, Victoria Centennial Square, Orchid and Hibiscus Gardens, Kuala Lumpur and UBC Botanical Gardens.

Firm qualified and licensed ten Landscape Architects under the BCSLA Exam system. The Firm's work is archived with the City of Vancouver Archives under JWV AMSS 1194 and includes work of Harry Webb, John Vincent, Toshi Ito, Dan Matsushita Stephen Sinclair, Fred Brookes, Christine Sharman, Rina Pita Peach, and others employed by the firm over 37 years.

Dan Matsushita*, LMBCSLA (#022L)
Dan was a BCSLA Charter Member from our early beginnings in 1963.  He tirelessly volunteered his time and expertise on the Board of Directors several times.  From 1965 to 1972 Dan was the first Landscape Designer for the Vancouver Board of Parks where his influence can still be seen today at Rupert Park, Second Beach , Bloedel Conservatory, Barclay Heritage Square and many other public spaces.   Dan served as a volunteer for the Canadian Executive Service Overseas and Aboriginal Projects.  He provided his expertise as a Canadian Making a Difference in India , China and locally. 

He worked in the private and public sector in Ontario and BC and was principal of Dan Matsushita Associates, and a founding partner in the DM Group (today we know the firm as DMG Landscape Architects) with David Mitchell and Barry Elliot.  Dan left an enormous legacy of completed work throughout the province, earning numerous awards for his work.  He developed long-term relationship with so many clients and colleagues that have continued to this day with the current partners in DMG.

General: Served WW II in Africa, Middle East and Europe (1939-1946).  Awarded Military Cross Mention in Despatches, 8th Army Clasp.  Emigrated to Canada and established a practice with projects in Canada, USA, Caribbean, East and West Africa and the Pacific.

William Yeomans*, BA, MSc, UC Berkley; LMBCSLA (#085-L)

General: After establishing a landscape architectural Firm in 1965, the Company was hired to conduct a province-wide inventory of outdoor recreation as part of the nation-wide Canada Land Inventory.  The Firm also worked under contract to Parks Canada developing a number of master plans for national parks.  Yeomans was Manager of the Biological Systems Division, Resource Analysis Branch, BC Ministry of Environment between l978 and 1982. Also worked on several large scale park systems within the USA.
