PechaKucha comes to Surrey
Launch event explores local and international public art
October 16, 6:30pm

Surrey Civic Theatres is launching a PechaKucha Night series at Centre Stage on October 16, and the theme for volume one is public art. Artists, architects, directors, and coordinators will inform and entertain you with short, fast-paced presentations about local and international public art. Doors open with a musical performance at 6:30pm, followed by the presentations from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Tickets are $15. Call the Surrey Civic Theatres Box Office (604.501.5566, press 1) or visit https://tickets.surrey.ca to book your seat. Centre Stage is located in Surrey City Hall (13450 104 Avenue).

PechaKucha is an international movement that creates forums for the exchange of ideas that relate primarily to the creative sector. There is a simple presentation format where speakers present 20 images for 20 seconds each, accompanied by dialogue. The presentation format was devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham architecture. The first PechaKucha Night was held at SuperDeluxe in Tokyo in February 2003 and has since spread to over 700 cities around the world. See www.pechakucha.org for more information.

The speakers in Surrey’s first PechaKucha event will present images, stories, and perspectives on public art created locally as well as internationally. Speakers include: Miriam Blume (Vancouver Biennale); Peggy Kendellen (Oregon’s Public Art Program); Cath Brunner (projects realized by 4Culture throughout Washington state); Laura Becker and Kelly Pajek (Seattle’s Public Art Program); Lori Phillip (City and District of North Vancouver’s Public Art Program); Karen Henry (Vancouver’s Public Art Program); Eric Fiss (Richmond’s Public Art Program); Barbara Cole and Vanessa Kwan (Other Sights for Artists’ Projects in Vancouver); Diana Freundl (Vancouver Art Gallery Offsite program); Karen Bubb (Copenhagen’s Little Mermaid sculpture by Edvard Eriksen in Denmark); and Bryan Lemos Beça and Steve DiPasquale (Surrey’s The Space of Difference interactive artwork on UrbanScreen http://www.surrey.ca/culture-recreation/15713.aspx).

This event is presented by the City of Surrey’s Public Art Program with the BC Public Art Network. PechaKucha Night is devised and shared by Klein Dytham architecture, and Surrey Civic Theatres is pleased to launch the PechaKucha Night Surrey series at Centre Stage with Vol 1. Public Art.
