We have an exciting opportunity to join the van der Zalm + associates (VDZ+A) team as a Site Review and Horticulture Specialist.  The successful applicant will report directly to senior staff and will assist on a wide range of both public and private projects. Our firm is a true design studio in that we involve all our designers in the concept and technical design development.

We are a young, vibrant, and growing group of landscape architects, civil engineers, certified arborists, and graphic specialists. We are an established multi-disciplinary firm with a diverse portfolio in parks and recreation, mixed-use and multi-family development, and institutional design. In addition, we have a strong reputation across Canada for our splash park and action sports design team.

The ideal candidate has previous nursery experience, on site construction experience or work within a construction team.  The applicant would be comfortable visiting job sites to review installations, prepare field reports, follow up with consultants and site people, and review deficiencies.  This position will report to the VDZ project management team and assist in key field reviews, planting design, and nursery stock assessments. 

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Lead our design team in reviewing and creating planting plan designs.
  • Update the plant database and keep staff up to date on the latest changes in plant species and selection.
  • Communicate regularly with local nurseries to determine supply and availability
  • Conduct inspections of planting installations.
  • Coordinate nursery reviews with contractors and provide written review for approval.
  • Review planting plans for suitability of material and species selection.

Rate of Pay: 
$60,000-$72,800
Education: 

Position Requirements:

  • Required - A minimum of 1-3 years of experience in landscape construction industry or nursery field.
  • Preferred – A technical or bachelor’s degree in horticulture or construction project management or a related field.
  • Strong communication skills including both verbal and written communication.
  • Confident sense of design and landscape aesthetic.
  • Ability to lead staff on the latest trends and design in the horticulture industry.
  • Comfortable in a team environment and ability to develop designs collaboratively.
  • ISA certification, tree risk assessment considered an asset.

 

     

    Experience: 

    Technical Requirements:

    • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
    • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD 2002 or later
    • Good verbal communication and ability to establish rapport with various people associated with the design and construction process.
