Park Planner

The Park Planner is a senior position responsible for design, construction and project management of urban design, park, public open space and urban design projects with both major and minor capital budgets. The work is conducted at various scales from city-wide initiatives to community, neighbourhood and site specific planning, design and construction. Examples of key work activities include: • Lead the planning, design and construction of a wide range of open space, park and community initiated capital projects. • Provide landscape architecture design services or manage consultants to provide design services. • Participate in processing development applications, from rezoning through development permit and servicing agreement, to ensure City objectives are met for parks and the public realm. • Perform field reviews of parks and public realm works constructed through servicing agreement. • Work and consult with multiple internal stakeholders including Planning & Development, Engineering and Public Works, Recreation and Cultural Services, and Environmental Sustainability. • Develop, coordinate and carry out effective and innovative public consultation processes. • Work and consult with multiple external stakeholders including developers, community organizations and other government agencies. • Represent Parks and bring expertise and creativity to corporate and project teams and strategic committees. • Prepare reports for City Council. • Provide input for a variety of corporate strategies and initiatives including Official Community Plan planning processes.

Education: 

Masters or Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture or a related discipline.

Experience: 

Minimum of 5 years related experience, including experience with municipal development review and approval processes, and project management experience with a wide range of park and public open space planning, design and construction projects. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES • Knowledge of landscape design principles and practices, landscape construction methods and materials and of horticultural techniques and practices. • Knowledge of the policies, procedures and bylaws governing the work. • Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures applicable to municipal planning. • Ability to develop conceptual plans and prepare or oversee preparation of detailed specifications for park and trail developments. • Ability to organize and conduct public meetings, prepare graphic presentations, collect public input and resolve conflicting demands. • Ability to coordinate the implementation of park and trail development projects with other municipal staff and monitor the work in progress. • Ability to liaise with a variety of internal and external contacts, to provide advice and assistance on park projects to departmental staff and members of the public, and to represent the department as required. • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications. • Ability to assist in selecting and overseeing the work of consultants.
