Public Art Assistant - Auxiliary (Casual/On-call)

POSITION OVERVIEW The Public Art Assistant will work collaboratively with the Public Art Planner and the Public Art Project Coordinator to enhance and support the Richmond Public Art Program. Reporting to the Public Art Planner, the Public Art Assistant will provide assistance in a variety of functions that will advance public art and place making in the City. Examples of key work activities include: • Perform a variety of day-to-day administrative and clerical duties that support the Public Art Program. • Provide assistance on the coordination of the artist selection process. • Assist with the preparation of artist and technician contracts. • Prepare purchase orders, honorariums and payment requisitions. • Provide assistance on the installation of art work and didactic signs. • Work with property owners and internal stakeholders to maintain public art projects. • Promote the Public Art Program and build awareness of the importance of art in public places through social media, news releases, posters and brochures. • Update and maintain the Public Art database and the City’s Public Art website. • Provide assistance on the coordination of events, meetings and presentations with external partners and organizations.

Education: 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Completion of two years post-secondary study in arts, culture, archival studies, events management or related discipline from a recognized institution, accompanied by a minimum of one year related experience in a similar position. Experience in public art programming and working in a municipal environment is an asset

Experience: 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES • Knowledge and interest in Public Art. • Ability to courteously and effectively deal with the public in providing information and building awareness of the Richmond Public Art Program. • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts over the phone and in person. • Ability to work effectively individually and as part of a team. • Proven ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally using standard formats and styles. • Knowledge and skill in the use of various social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. • Ability to develop and prepare news releases, posters and brochures. • Ability to perform administrative duties with speed and accuracy without immediate and constant supervision. • Skill in the use of computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook with the ability to apply various computer applications to public art projects. • Ability to quickly learn new procedures and techniques. • Ability to successfully pass a Police Information Check. LICENCES, CERTIFICATES AND REGISTRATIONS Valid Class 5 driver’s licence for the Province of British Columbia. WORKING CONDITIONS AND EFFORT Duties are mostly performed in an office environment, with some construction site visits and inspections. Some field work may be required.
