Urban Environmental Designer - one year

Reporting to the Manager of Utilities, the Urban Environment Designer performs technical design work of a landscape architectural nature performed in the office and in the field.  The incumbent coordinates the implementation of landscape development projects; 

  • develops conceptual plans; 
  • prepares detailed plans, drawings, cost estimates, specifications and tender documents; 
  • inspects construction and recommends specification changes during construction as required; 
  • and maintains liaison with a variety of internal and external contacts.
Education: 
  • Graduation from an institute of technology diploma program in landscape design and horticulture, or an equivalent combination of training and experience;
  • Thorough knowledge of landscape design methods, principles and practices, particularly relating to green infrastructure (e.g.: rain gardens) and streets/boulevards;
  • Considerable knowledge of computerized drafting (AutoCAD), mapping (ArcGIS) and graphics principles, techniques, and related software;
Experience: 

The ideal candidate for this job will have the following qualifications:

  • Graduation from an institute of technology diploma program in landscape design and horticulture, or an equivalent combination of training and experience;
  • Thorough knowledge of landscape design methods, principles and practices, particularly relating to green infrastructure (e.g.: rain gardens) and streets/boulevards; 
  • Considerable knowledge of computerized drafting (AutoCAD), mapping (ArcGIS) and graphics principles, techniques, and related software; 
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment; 
  • Ability to coordinate the implementation of landscape projects and assist in project budget planning and control of construction progress and expenditures; 
  • Ability to develop design proposals and conceptual plans for landscape development projects, and to prepare detailed plans, drawings, maps, specifications, cost estimates and tender documents applicable to the work, and to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications;
  • To manage complex drainage-related projects and coordinate/review the work of consultants and contractors; 
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of stream flow monitoring equipment would be an asset;
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the field of landscape design and construction inspection; 
  • Self motivated with strong interpersonal skills; 
  • A valid BC Drivers’ License
