9:15  am      Presentation:  GETTING OUT OF THE “ARCHITECTURAL BOX” IN THE AGE OF THE ANTHROPOCENE

Cal Meiklejohn & Fiona Barton
Fiona and Cal will facilitate a working session to explore how the two architectural fields can work together and help to move the environmental agenda forward in the anthropocene age of man-made climate change. In particular, they will explore the relationship between landscape and building architecture both inside and outside of the “architectural box” and how to get out of it to both enjoy and appreciate the unique geography and climat e of the Okanagan. An initial presentation will flow into a breakout session to produce a BCSLA guide of the ’10 best design elements to get humans to get out of their architectural boxes’.

Fiona and her coworkers are proud this year to be celebrating a milestone of 20 years for Outland Design Landscape Architecture. Since 1998, we have grown into a tight knit team of 13, based in the Central Okanagan, working hard (and playing hard) on a variety of public and private sector projects. We believe in connection with our clients and their projects and strive to create places which enhance and protect the environment while providing socially rich and people-friendly spaces.

Cal Meiklejohn, ARCHITECT AIBC, FRAIC, LEED AP
Cal was born and raised in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada and it was in this arid, semi-desert landscape where learned how the environment can influence architectural form and character. He has a Bachelor of Environmental Studies from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg where he took the Landscape Architecture option in his final year and a Bachelor of Architecture from UBC in Vancouver.  He has lived and worked – in English and French - in Montreal, Quebec and has traveled extensively throughout Europe and North America. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. He is the principal of Meiklejohn Architect Design Studio Inc..

Fiona Barton, MBCSLA, CSLA
A registered member with the BCSLA, Fiona has a wealth of expertise in private practice and local government settings, allowing her to see the perspective from ‘both sides of the table’. She hails from Scotland originally, and has practiced landscape architecture in Boston, Newfoundland, Ontario and Vancouver. Since 2001, Fiona has called the interior of BC home.  She is the principal of Outland Design Landscape Architecture.
