External Relations and Special Projects Manager

The School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA) seeks an External Relations and Special Projects Manager to provide creative direction and strategy to the design and implementation of externally-oriented outreach and communications initiatives and a significant multi-year building project initiative of the Faculty of Applied Science (APSC).  This position will broaden and elevate awareness of the School, its faculty, students, academic programs, build relationships with its public, professional, alumni and donor communities and, develop interest, concepts and strategies for this large (approximately 62,000 sm) building initiative of which SALA will be a part.   

In this role, the External Relations and Special Projects Manager directs and manages creative communications and outreach work that bridges related areas of responsibility in APSC and SALA. In SALA this position works directly with the SALA Director to set creative direction and strategic management of SALA's marketing, recruiting, communications, outreach and fundraising infrastructure and initiatives. With SALA and APSC, this position works directly with the SALA Director and senior staff in APSC Development & Alumni Engagement to develop communications and outreach strategies and materials related to the APSC building project.  Outside of APSC and SALA, this position liaises with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the success of external relations and special projects initiatives

Work performed

Responsibilities and duties related to SALA external outreach and communications:

  • Designs and directs an outreach and communications plan for SALA that positions and differentiates the school in a global academic context of design schools and competitors.
  • Designs and directs recruitment and marketing plans appropriate to SALA’s academic programs (Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Design / Bachelor of Design, Urban Design)
  • Designs and develops strategies for communications and media relations related to SALA achievements, events and activities.
  • Develops and maintains contact and communication with external media, professional and academic constituencies in support of SALA achievements, events and activities.
  • Researches, designs and writes articles, media releases, reports, graphics, web- and social media posts and other forms of external communication for the School.
  • Designs and implements an archive of student and faculty work for use in exhibition, publication, and web-based communications.
  • Facilitates development and production of a SALA Strategic Plan and related communications.
  • Provides strategic advice and leadership related to outreach and communications to faculty and staff affiliated with SALA’s outreach and communications governance and academic program portfolios.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Responsibilities and duties related to SALA external outreach and communications:

  • Develops a communications vision and brand for the building project in consultation with building project leadership and staff.
  • Researches, illustrates and writes summary materials related to building project programs, facilities, siting and comparators.
  • Develops, designs and produces narrative and graphic materials that communicate key spatial concepts, issues and options for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develops, designs and produces narrative and graphic content (in collaboration with APSC Development staff) for project related presentations, exhibitions, communications, marketing and fundraising materials and events.
  • Leads planning, design and facilitation of internal and external stakeholder workshops related to the building project.


Experience: 

Professional or comparable degree in architecture, landscape architecture or urban design. Minimum of six years of experience directing marketing and communications in a professional design practice context and /or equivalent academic or institutional context. Familiarity with both professional design practice and academic communications cultures and service providers.
