SCOPE

The City’s Parks Division is responsible for the delivery and operation of Surrey’s parks system which is over 7,300 acres in size. Parks provide a wide range of outdoor recreation opportunities for the City’s residents while also protecting valuable forests and sensitive ecosystems.
The Parks Landscape Technician will provide varied support to Parks, Planning, Research & Design staff including technical and graphic support and drafting work related to the planning, design and construction of Surrey’s parks. The position reports to the Landscape Architects and is part of a team of planners and designers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist with the conceptual design, detailed design, coordination, and delivery of the Parks Division’s 2023 and 2024 capital projects.
• Perform site analysis, precedent research, public consultation, cost estimating, project budgeting, marketing and communications, land use mapping, plant and tree research and lists, and work on strategies/guidelines.
• Draft standard construction details for various park elements as well as the preparation of site construction details and site features as required based on direction provided by a supervisor.
• Assist others in the development of methods and procedures for carrying projects to completion from advance planning to design to construction drawings.
• Convey complex technical information to the public through the preparation of clear and readable schematics, process charts, perspectives, site plans, elevations, cross-sections, construction details, electronic displays and other forms for communication.
• Maintain a high level of proficiency in using computer software.
• Perform other duties as required.

Education: 

As the successful candidate, you are an independent self-starter and a great team member. You’re a logical and analytical problem solver with a knowledge of the industry and a flare for creative thinking. You are a great communicator who can deal diplomatically with the public, contractors and City staff. You are familiar with landscape and park construction techniques and are able to prepare construction detail drawings using AutoCAD software.

You also meet the following criteria:

• Degree in Landscape Architecture or Diploma in Landscape Technology or Diploma of Technology from a nationally accredited program, preferably with a specialization in landscape drafting;
• Supplemented by a minimum of 1 year experience in a technical role and at least 1 year of office drafting experience;

Experience: 

You also meet the following criteria:

• Supplemented by a minimum of 1 year experience in a technical role and at least 1 year of office drafting experience;
• Demonstrated proficiency in the use of AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop;
• Competency in ArcGIS, Google Sketchup, Bluebeam Revu are considered an asset;
• An acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience;
• Valid B.C. Driver's License; and Preference for a candidate with demonstrated experience using the Canadian Landscape Standard, BC Building Code and the Master Municipal Construction Documents.
• You are certified and registered, or are eligible to be certified and registered, as a member of the BC Society of Landscape Architects; or
as an Applied Science Technologist (AScT) or Certified Technician under the Applied Science Technologists & Technicians Act &
Regulations of British Columbia.
