Park Design Technician (Job ID#2014206)

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Parks Project Technologist, this position provides technical support for park planning, design, and construction projects and is responsible for facilitating the successful transition from conceptual design to detailed final construction document readiness.  Examples of key work activities include:

Development and preparation of base plans, drawings, and specifications for park design and construction projects including integrating survey data, civil services and utilities.

Preparation of detailed construction layout, drainage & grading plans for a variety of park construction projects including playgrounds, sports fields, trails, sport courts, other park assets.

Conduct inspections and liaises with internal and external staff, consultants and contractors, including conducting reviews of consultant designs to ensure Parks department standards are met.

Conduct research for; and preparation of, cost estimates and specifications for park construction projects.

Project coordination and field reviews of minor capital construction projects and the supervision of contracts associated with them.

Technical support (mapping and graphic) for Community Services Department presentations, displays, and promotional activities.

Coordination and management of the Parks GIS Tree Management Program and coordination of various site play equipment and associated infrastructure improvement projects.

Education: 

Completion of a Civil Engineering or Landscape Architecture Technology certificate plus a minimum of 2-3 years work experience in a Civil Engineering or Landscape Architecture practice, Municipal Park System, OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. 

Experience: 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of municipal engineering/parks design principles, methods and techniques including engineering mathematics.

Ability to read and interpret landscape/engineering plans and specifications.

Proficient in the preparation of survey base plans and construction drawings using AutoCAD and Land Development Desktop Applications – Survey addition.

Performs skilled drafting and design tasks in preparation of preliminary and design drawings for a variety of complex municipal park projects.

Knowledge of the methods, practices and techniques used in estimating costs for materials, labour, and equipment used in park construction projects. 

Ability to coordinate the implementation of minor capital park construction projects and assist in project budget planning and control of construction progress and expenditures. 

Ability to prepare presentations and display materials pertaining to park design and construction projects and supporting Recreation and Cultural Services initiatives.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external contacts to elicit or present ideas or data pertinent to the work.

Proficient skill in the use of AutoCAD and Land Development Desktop Applications.

Experience with ArcMap GIS is preferable.

Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign skills would be an asset.

Ability to use REDMS or a similar records management system would be an asset.
