At Donohoe Living Landscapes, planting is never an afterthought. It is a living layer that gives our landscapes rhythm, ecology, and character over time.

We are seeking a Landscape Designer with a strong passion for horticulture to join our team in British Columbia. This role is focused on the development and realization of our planting designs across a portfolio of exceptional residential landscapes.

Working closely with our design team, you will help shape planting strategies that respond to architecture, ecology, and the life of the people who will inhabit these spaces. From early design conversations through plant sourcing and installation, you will play a key role in bringing thoughtful planting compositions to life.

This position offers the opportunity to be involved in every stage of the process. You will contribute to plant selection and design development, source exceptional plant material, and support the execution of installations in collaboration with designers, clients, and contractors. Attention to detail, horticultural knowledge, and a collaborative mindset will ensure that each project is realized with clarity and care.

A typical week:

  • Using your abundance of plant knowledge, you will curate planting palettes and designs for our projects across BC, Eastern and Western Canada, Washington to California, the Mid-West and Hawaii;
  • Working on sites or in our studio in Gastown, you will collaborate directly with clients, contractors, and subcontractors to properly communicate design intent;
  • Through the Horticulture lens, you will collaborate with our landscape architects and designers on concepts and working drawings;
  • Sourcing and selecting plant material at nurseries across the Pacific Northwest that meet the high standard of our projects;
  • Assist the landscaping teams with the laying out of the softscape and review their work;
  • Interview landscape maintenance companies and manage them through the first 2 months post construction;
  • Estimate time for planting designs for projects, and budgeting for materials;
  • Contribute to our ‘community’ projects, show gardens and extraordinary installations;
  • Continually build upon your plant and design knowledge;
  • Bring your enthusiasm for landscape designs that push the boundary of what is expected.

What you’ll bring:

  • 3+ years working as a Landscape Designer or Horticulturalist with a focus on residential planting design, or strong desire to learn all things residential;
  • A diploma or degree in Landscape Design or Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, or Garden Design;
  • A comprehensive understanding of all plants native and commonly used in the Pacific Northwest (knowledge of tropical or desert plants a bonus);
  • Innate passion for horticulture - this candidate is very interested in creating beautiful landscapes, while focusing on ecological restoration, sustainability, and the use of native species.
  • Experience and passion for working in the soil as a gardener or landscaper.
  • A tenacious attitude, with the desire to learn and constantly bring unique and new ideas to the forefront;
  • Skilled understanding of CAD (ideally Vectorworks) and Adobe Design Suite;
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License – though this is a Vancouver-based position.

What we offer:

  • A supportive environment with plenty of opportunities to advance your career;
  • Work-life balance with flexible hours;
  • Competitive wages: $32-$36/hr, to start depending on experience, and an extended benefits package;
  • A beautiful, centrally located office and convivial work environment where you are empowered to manage your work as you see fit.

We welcome everyone to apply!
