The 2025 living wage for Metro Vancouver has risen to $27.85 per hour, a 3% increase from last year. Since the first Metro Vancouver living wage calculation in 2008, the living wage has been higher than the BC minimum wage. While the gap between the two narrowed from 2018 to 2021, due to substantial minimum wage increases and policy changes, it has widened again in recent years.
Housing, food, and child care remain the largest and fastest-growing expenses, with rent increases outpacing general inflation and food insecurity worsening across BC.
Government initiatives such as increases to key income-tested government benefits, ongoing child care affordability improvements and the roll-out of the Canadian Dental Care Plan have provided some relief. The savings, however, have been entirely consumed by soaring prices—especially for housing and food—leaving many households struggling to make ends meet.
