Salary: $53.70 – 55.93 – 58.32 – 60.87 – 63.45/hour

Schedule: 70 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:45 PM (Nine-Day Fortnight)

Burnaby is experiencing significant growth and change, creating new opportunities to shape parks and recreation spaces that serve a growing and diverse community. This position plays an important role in turning long-term plans and community needs into high-quality, welcoming and sustainable parks and recreation spaces. Through project leadership, collaboration and thoughtful design, the successful candidate will help shape the future of Burnaby’s park system and contribute to the implementation of the City’s Making Life Better: Parks, Recreation and Culture Plan.

Working in the Parks, Recreation and Culture Planning division, this position leads and supports the planning and design of new parks and recreation facilities and the redevelopment of existing parklands and facilities. The position provides professional park planning expertise and advice on a range of planning, design, environmental and related matters.

The incumbent leads projects from planning and concept development through detailed design, coordinating with internal departments, consultants, community stakeholders and other partners to deliver high-quality park and recreation spaces that respond to community needs. Responsibilities include preparing park development plans, designs, specifications, cost estimates and budget requirements, managing and coordinating consultants, developing recommendations on park planning and related issues, and representing the department at internal and external meetings.

The position requires considerable professional judgement and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities within established policies, regulations, schedules and budget constraints. The successful candidate will work collaboratively across the organization and with external partners to advance park projects and support the delivery of Burnaby’s Parks, Recreation and Culture initiatives.

Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

• University graduation in Landscape Architecture or a related discipline, combined with considerable related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Courses or additional training in environmental science are considered an asset.
• Considerable knowledge of landscape design principles and practices, park construction methods and materials, and horticultural techniques.
• Sound knowledge of policies, procedures and bylaws applicable to municipal park planning and development.
• Demonstrated ability to develop conceptual plans and prepare and oversee the preparation of detailed specifications for parks and public open space projects.
• Ability to develop and monitor project budgets and manage consultants and contracts.
• Ability to organize and facilitate meetings with public interest groups and other interested parties, prepare graphic presentations, and resolve competing or conflicting demands.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering, architectural and landscape architectural plans.
• Proficiency in drafting and graphic design tools and software.
• A valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver’s License.
• Registration, or eligibility for registration, with the British Columbia Society of Landscape Architects (BCSLA).

This is a Temporary Full Time position until October 1, 2027.
