Scope
The City's Parks Division is responsible for the delivery and operation of Surrey's parks system, which encompasses more than 7,300 acres (2,700 hectares) of parkland. Parks provide a wide range of outdoor recreation opportunities for residents while also protecting valuable forests and sensitive ecosystems.
The Parks Landscape Technician provides a range of support to Parks, Planning, Research & Design staff, including technical and graphic support, drafting work related to the planning, design, and construction of Surrey's parks, and coordination of park design projects. This position reports to the Landscape Architects and works as part of a collaborative team of park planners and designers.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the conceptual design, detailed design, coordination, and delivery of the Parks Division's 2026 and 2027 capital projects, including Nicomekl Riverfront Park and three new neighborhood parks.
- Conduct site analysis, precedent research, public consultation activities, cost estimating, project budgeting, marketing and communications support, land-use mapping, and plant and tree research and lists; contribute to the development of strategies and guidelines.
- Draft standard construction details for various park elements and prepare site-specific construction details and site features as directed by a supervisor.
- Assist in the development of methods and procedures to carry projects through all phases, from advance planning and design to construction drawings.
- Communicate complex technical information to the public through clear and readable schematics, process charts, perspectives, site plans, elevations, cross-sections, construction details, electronic displays, and other visual communication materials.
- Maintain a high level of proficiency in relevant computer software.
- Provide drawing reviews for parks and park-fronting development projects.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
As the successful candidate, you are an independent self-starter who works well both independently and as part of a team. You are a logical and analytical problem-solver with strong industry knowledge and a flair for creative thinking. You are an effective communicator, able to engage diplomatically with the public, contractors, and City staff. You are familiar with landscape and park construction techniques and are proficient in preparing construction detail drawings using AutoCAD software.
- A degree in Landscape Architecture, or a Diploma in Landscape Technology or Technology from a nationally accredited program, preferably with a specialization in landscape drafting.
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience in a technical role and at least one (1) year of office drafting experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency using AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.
- Experience with ArcGIS, Google SketchUp, and Bluebeam Revu is considered an asset.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- A valid class 5 B.C. Driver's License with safe driving record.
- Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience using the Canadian Landscape Standard, the BC Building Code, and the Master Municipal Construction Documents.
- Certification and registration, or eligibility for certification and registration, as a member of the BC Society of Landscape Architects, or as an Applied Science Technologist (AScT) or Certified Technician under the Applied Science Technologists & Technicians Act and Regulations of British Columbia.
