Assistant Professor in Landscape Architecture – Position Number 31171
The Department of Landscape Architecture invites applicants for a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank, commencing January 1, 2023 or July 1, 2023.
Candidates will have a passion for design and research in landscape architecture, interest and ability to work with allied disciplines, and apply innovative and creative approaches to their work. Candidates must have a well-articulated research agenda in landscape architecture based on scholarly activities or professional practice, the ability to teach design studios and lecture courses in an area of specialization, and to advise graduate students.
The position includes teaching studios and lecture courses in the Landscape + Urbanism option of the undergraduate Environmental Design program and/or the Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) program. The teaching load will generally comprise two studios and one lecture course or one studio and two lecture courses in each academic year.
The position also requires the appointee to engage in scholarly activities (encompassing applied scholarship, creative work, professional practice, or research) and service within the University and to the wider community. The appointee will report to (and be assigned teaching duties by) the Head of Landscape Architecture. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Candidates will be reviewed in terms of the following criteria:
- doctoral degree in landscape architecture or in a closely related field strongly preferred
- accredited degree or equivalent in landscape architecture
- demonstrated research ability and/or design achievement in practice
- eligibility for full membership of the Manitoba Association of Landscape Architects / Canadian Society of Landscape Architects
- evidence of ability to teach studio and make their research applicable in teaching and practice
- expertise in one or more of the following key areas is desirable (listed, not prioritized):
ecology, plants, community design, current digital design technologies particularly Geographic Information Systems

The Master of Landscape Architecture at the University of Manitoba is the oldest graduate program in the discipline in Canada. The program is fully accredited by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, giving graduates formal recognition throughout Canada and the United States.
Manitoba encompasses prairie, boreal plains, boreal shield, taiga shield, Hudson plains, and southern arctic ecozones.
