Landscape Architect II - Park Board (Senior Landscape Architect)

Main Purpose & Function

Reporting to a Landscape Architect Team Lead, the Senior Landscape Architect delivers complex capital projects including the development of new parks, park renewals, and park infrastructure upgrades and monitors a portion of the Park Board capital budget.  Four positions will be filled and each position will have a primary focus on 2015-2018 capital plan projects:  Nature and connectivity, downtown parks, waterfront parks, and parks in East Fraserlands.  Other projects will also be included as projects vary over capital cycles.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

This work involves oversight of junior staff and working with other City staff and committees including Bid Committee, Major Projects Steering Committee, Capital Delivery Oversight Committee, Park Board senior management, the elected Park Board and City Council, the development community, partners and stakeholders for park project delivery. The successful candidate will work independently and be relied upon to oversee the team undertaking design and construction for complex and major Park Board projects including the preparation of conceptual plans, graphic presentations, public engagement processes, reporting, detailed designs and construction documents, and financial and time allocations for assigned projects. The candidate will also be responsible for project management of specific projects.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of park planning, landscape architecture, arboriculture, urban planning and landscape design and construction; municipal parks and recreation trends; municipal planning and development processes; municipal capital project approval processes (trade, building and development permits for construction); and environmental planning and urban sustainability initiatives including best management practices, policies and legislation for park construction
  • Good knowledge of park planning and social research methodologies, and of community recreation resources and programs in parks.
  • Ability to achieve multiple objectives within defined timelines, work on complex projects, budgets and manage consultant and contractor teams effectively
  • Ability to communicate ideas effectively, both orally and in writing, including excellent report writing skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple budgets and track and report financial information.
  • Ability to perform complex technical research and prepare reports independently.
  • Ability to supervise technical and professional staff.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and make recommendations on park and recreation needs.
  • Ability to work effectively within the Park Board, with City officials and with other interested groups including citizen groups.

Education: 

Education and Experience:

  • A degree in landscape architecture, or a related field and a recommended minimum of 10 years professional experience in municipal parks design and construction, some supervisory experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience: 
  • Experience with work in interdisciplinary project teams, facilitation, evaluating proposals, communicating complex ideas and making sound recommendations will be given preference.
  • Experience in directing the work of multi-disciplinary design consultants and construction contractors and negotiating change orders will be given preference.
  • Experience in overseeing park and landscape protection measures during construction including tree protection, soil, storm water management, contaminated sites management, archaeological resources and utility coordination will be given preference.
  • Experience in supervising staff will be given preference.
  • Eligibility for membership in the BC Society of Landscape Architects is desirable.
