Senior Park Planner

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Leads the planning and design of Victoria’s parks, trails and greenways through the management of capital parks projects and related initiatives.

 

KEY DUTIES

Play a lead role in the planning, design and construction of Victoria’s parks through the management of a variety of park renewal and development projects.

 

Direct and coordinate multi-disciplinary project teams; consult with community and park user groups; oversee the work of staff and contractors; manage project budgets and timelines; interface with various individuals and bodies such as the public, community associations, and other senior staff.  Perform technical landscape design work; prepare conceptual and detailed drawings and specifications.

 

Work with volunteers, community members, park user groups, and community based project committees. Respond to inquiries from the public, park users, and City staff. Prepare, plan and host community open houses. Liaise with municipal crews, contractors, consultants, suppliers, and government agencies.

 

Prepare grant and funding proposals; draft professional service agreements; assist in the development of park policies, strategies and bylaws. Prepare reports for Council on various Park planning initiatives.

 

Position reports to the Manager of Park Design & Construction.

  

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Understand and apply the principles of parks and greenways planning and design, project management, landscape architecture and natural areas management.

Perform technical landscape design work; prepare conceptual and detailed drawings and specifications.

Read and interpret technical information, architectural drawings and various legislation.

Prepare reports and make presentations.

Facilitate public consultation meetings and workshops.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Represent the City to the public and outside agencies.

Ability to organize and prioritize work.

Working level competency with current City word processing, spreadsheet and computer aided design software.

Ability to work safely on job sites.

 

Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 35hrs/week

$48.12 per hour, Pay Grade 17

Education: 

Accredited undergraduate degree (4+ years) in landscape architecture or related program.

Experience: 

5 years of experience in parks planning, design and constructionor an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Member of or eligible for membership with the British Columbia Society of Landscape Architects (BCSLA)
