Summer Student- Community Planning

The City of Abbotsford is currently growing and evolving in a dynamic way and the Community Planning department is seeking a hard-working, self-motivated Summer Student for a four month employment opportunity from May to August 2019.

Job duties may include:

  • Assists with preparing maps and diagrams for reports and studies using GIS software and other related software applications.
  • Assists with preparing graphics and power point presentations for planning reports and studies.
  • Assists with preparing reports and correspondence for signature by supervisor(s).
  • Assists with a variety of research tasks related to planning feasibility studies, regulation development and policy formulation
  • Collect data from drawings and transfer to a database.
  • Other related duties, as necessary.

The hourly rate of pay for this position is as follows plus an additional 4% in lieu of benefits:

2nd year student$18.07

3rd year student$19.51

4th year student  $21.23

Education: 

·        

Studying at a post-secondary institution for a minimum of two years in Geography or Applied Urban and Regional Planning from a recognized post-secondary institution planning, geography, or a related field;

Experience: 

·        

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare a variety of correspondence;

·        

Self-motivated with the ability to make good decisions regarding priorities in a fast paced, deadline-orientated work environment;

·        

Ability to explain and apply a wide variety of Local Government bylaws and regulations, including the Official Community Plan and zoning bylaw.

·        

Ability to collect and analyze a wide variety of planning related information

·        

Ability to write reports concerning various types of development applications.

·        

Some working knowledge of various software including ARCview, GIS, Adobe PhotoShop and PowerPoint.

·        

Excellent customer service skills and the ability to maintain good working relationships with others.
