Urban Designer

The City of Victoria is located on the homelands of the Songhees and Esquimalt People. 

The City of Victoria is seeking an Urban Designer with strong design, collaboration, communication, and engagement experience. This position is based within the Community Planning department and includes collaboration across other departments within the City. Key activities include:

  • preparation of urban design policies, guidelines and concepts 
  • facilitating charrettes, visioning and  engagement events 
  • engaging with neighbourhood and professional groups and Committees of Council
  • acting as an urban design advisor for Council and across City departments to integrate urban design considerations into City projects.

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Organize and prioritize work.

Develop conceptual design drawings, graphics and communication  

Understand and apply the principles of urban design and planning.

Compose and present proposals and policies.

Develop and present conceptual design proposals

Read and interpret technical information, architectural drawings and legislation.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.

Able to substitute in a more senior position when required.

Education: 

University undergraduate degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture or Urban Design (4 years)

Experience: 

Eligible for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners,  Architectural Insistute of B.C. (Architect or Associate) or BC Society of Landscape Architects (Landscape Architect or Associate)
