Planner 1 - Streetscape and Pedestrian

The City of North Vancouver is the urban core of the beautiful North Shore and has a long-term vision to be “The Healthiest Small City in the World”, with five key priorities to be a City for People, a Liveable City, a Vibrant City, a Connected City and a Prosperous City.

The City of North Vancouver Engineering, Parks and Environment Department requires a temporary full time Planner 1 for approximately 12 months to lead the prioritization and implementation of the City’s streetscape and pedestrian improvement projects.

 This position will be a part of the Public Realm Infrastructure team (PRI) and reports to the Manager, Public Realm Infrastructure; you will be responsible for a variety of policy, planning and public works construction projects.  This will involve developing prioritization processes, leading public consultation, and design development of pedestrian oriented public works.  You will contribute to the development of the capital plan, review development proposals, prepare reports and recommendations, and liaise with a variety of internal and external contacts.  You will also coordinate and attend public meetings and attend City Council and Advisory Committee Meetings (as required).  You will oversee consultant work and contribute expertise to larger scale capital projects being delivered by the PRI.

For temporary full-time positions of eight (8) months or longer, a City employee who is successful on the posting will have the right to revert to their former position.

Salary:           

$43.04 to $50.85 per hour

(Pay Grade 28– January 2019 rates)

Hours of Work:

The City of North Vancouver currently works on a compressed work schedule of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, with one scheduled day off (Monday or Friday) approximately each three-week scheduling cycle.

Education: 

Your qualifications include a university degree in an appropriate discipline such as Community/Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, or other related areas with professional design experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Professional membership or eligibility in the Canadian Institute of Planners or the Planning Institute of British Columbia is required.  Previous project management experience would be beneficial to the role. A valid Class 5 Driver’s License is required.

Experience: 

You will have considerable knowledge of practices, principles and techniques applicable to pedestrian oriented public space planning and design, and the ability to understand and explain technical concepts and plans, and the ability to provide professional advice to other departments.  Your proven communication and interpersonal skills will allow you to build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders and ensure success in the public consultation process.  You will also draw on your organizational skills to handle multiple projects, prioritize workloads and meet deadlines.
