Surrey Civic Distinction Awards City of Surrey - Civic Distinction Awards Sep 29, 2020 : 8:00 am to Oct 17, 2020 : 4:45 pm

The 2020 Civic Distinction Awards (formerly City Awards) are awards of excellence that acknowledge business and community leaders who have made a major contribution to the City of Surrey in their respective fields.  By recognizing their work, these awards foster a culture of excellence in Surrey and highlight the people and projects that are leading the way. The award recipients will be announced in early December 2020.

These awards are held every four years and include the following Award Categories: Beautification and Enhancement Award, Design Award, Environmental Award, Heart Award, Arts and Heritage Award, Mayor’s Choice Award and Sport Tourism Award.

The Design Award category recognizes the outstanding contributions in design of open spaces, public realms, urban design and public art. Areas of consideration include accessibility, sustainable design, form and character, quality of design and crime-prevention.

Categories:

Residential (Small Scale): Innovative single family and ground-oriented townhouse developments in multiple building developments, i.e., including small lot single family, single family with coach houses, duplexes, live/work townhouses, stacked townhouses, and other compact forms of housing. 

Residential (Medium Scale): Apartment building and stacked townhouse complexes with predominantly residential use of up to six storeys

Residential (Large Scale): Apartment buildings of 7 storeys and higher with predominantly residential use, and large mixed-use projects containing more than 50% residential uses.

Commercial and Industrial: Industrial, office, warehouse, retail and related uses of any size or height, as well as mixed use projects containing predominantly non-residential uses. 

Institutional:  Projects for any level of government, public agency, educational or health authority, religious institution or Crown Corporation e.g. recreation or community centres, schools, health care, government agencies, religious, non-profit, etc.

Landscape, Public Space and Infrastructure:  Public or publicly accessible open space, stand-alone or as part of a larger development, i.e., park, plaza, amenity area, courtyard; may be privately or publicly funded.  Landscape design, including both natural (soft) and constructed (hard) elements.

Renovation and Adaptive Re-Use: The interior or exterior renovation of a structure at least 25 years old. 

Interiors: Non-residential interior spaces for any size or type of building, provided there is at least occasional public access.

Public Art: Original site-specific artwork commissioned and installed in a highly visible location as part of a private development and designed to positively contribute to place-making and the City’s character.
